Camel milk and ostrich eggs for Lankans

Camels and ostriches are to be imported to improve animal husbandry in the country, Livestock and Rural Community Development Deputy Minister H.R. Mithrapala said yesterday.

He told parliament during the debate on the ministry’s vote that the intention was to encourage people to drink camel milk and eat ostrich eggs.

He said a study was being conducted in Mannar to see whether the camels could be bred there.
The Deputy Minister said 200,000 chicks would be imported to promote chicken farming in the north and east.

“There is a big demand for chicken by farmers in these areas. The Government has allocated funds to obtain the necessary stocks,” he said.

However, Democratic National Alliance member Anura Dissanayake warned about importing chicks from India because of the danger of bird flu.
