Greatest person in my life

By Oshadie Gunawardana (12 years), Nugawela Girls’ College, Kandy

You showed me the correct path
You showed me how to win
You not only taught me
lessons
But also became my shadow

I remember one day how afraid I was
To face a competition and cried
All thought I couldn’t win
But only you thought I could

Yes, true to it, I proved it.
But today you are gone
I know one thing for sure
Forever you will be in my heart
My dear teacher…

A narrow escape

By Akif Ameer (Grade 6), Universal Int. College, Balangoda

One day my father and I had to go to Colombo for a wedding. Our car was in a garage to be repaired. So my father and I thought of going by bus.

The next morning we got into the Colombo Express. On the way at Eheliyagoda, we stopped to have breakfast. Afterwards I felt sick, so I told my father. He took me to the bathroom. When we came out, the bus had gone.

So we waited for about half an hour for another bus. Then another bus came, which was on its way to Beruwala. We got into it. When we were in Avissawella there was a big traffic. We got out to see what was wrong.

There was a bus fallen on the road. There were many injuries and many deaths. My father said that it was the bus that we missed earlier. I was shocked. It was a narrow escape.

We went on to Colombo and went for the wedding. It was about 8 p.m., when we came back home. We told everyone what happened. From that day my parents are scared to send me in the bus.

I went to the moon

By Savindu Herat (9 years), Royal Int. School, Kurunegala

It was our sportsmeet day and I was tired after coming home. I had my dinner early and went to sleep. At once I fell asleep.

I was dressed in an astronaut’s costume. How nice! I was floating in space. I got into a spacecraft. It went up at a high speed. I started floating because of the gravity. I thought that at home we are not floating but in the rocket we are floating.

I ate lots of sweets and food inside the rocket. I saw a comet coming to hit my craft. But my craft was quicker than the comet. At last my craft didn’t blast.

I saw Jupiter, Saturn, the Sun and all the planets in order. I went to the moon. After landing, my spacecraft stood like a spider on the moon. I thought that space was different than living on earth.

I took out the Sri Lankan Flag and situated it on the moon. I saw Neil Armstrong’s footprint also. I saw a space car and got into it. After a while I stopped because I couldn’t control it. I went back to earth in my spacecraft.

I heard a voice calling my name. I got up to see my mother was by the side of my bed. I then thought that it was all only a dream.

Education

By Thivya Thirumal (12 years), Jennings Int. College, Nainamadama

The word education comes from the Greek word “Educo”. It means ‘bringing out the values of man’. When a man is born into this world, he is born with intelligence and values. But it is education that brings them out.

Thus education plays an important role in a man’s life. The main aim of education is character building. “If wealth is lost, nothing is lost, if health is lost something is lost, but if character is lost, everything is lost,” goes the saying. Education moulds a person to be a better member of society.
