A special tusker

Millangoda Atha also known as Loku Raja, is considered to be the elephant with the longest tusks in Asia. This 70 year old majestic elephant’s tusks are about seven to eight feet long and they touch the ground.

The tusker who is currently in Molagoda, Kegalle, is a major attraction among tourists and locals alike, says his owner Appuhamy Millangoda who descends from a family of elephant lovers who have kept elephants for generations.

“Lots of tourists who travel to Kandy, stop by Molagoda to see Loku Raja and take his pictures.

School children also come to see the elephant very often,” Appuhamy says, adding that the tusker was taken to carry the casket of the Dalada perahera several times.

Appuhamy recalled the day when Loku Raja was brought home in 1945, after he was found wandering around alone in a jungle close to the village of Millangoda.

The tusker has been a very mild, obedient and faithful animal, says the owner adding that he has never attacked human beings or fellow elephants.
