CCC depleted by player exodus

Premier League Cricket

By M. Shamil Amit

The Premier Limited Over cricket tournament which ushers the inter-club domestic cricket season due to begin on December 1 is unlikely to be conducted as per schedule due to the inclement weather conditions prevailing at the moment.

The new CCC coach Charith Senanayake has a task at hand

Sri Lanka Cricket Operational Manager Ashley de Silva stated that it is most likely that the tournament might be re-scheduled. The final decision on that is due to taken after a committee meeting which is scheduled to take place tomorrow (Monday).

Accordingly and most probably there wont be a delay of more than one week said Ashley de Silva. The Tier ‘A’ category will be contested by 11 teams divided into two groups while Tier ‘B’ will be fought out by ten teams also divided into two groups.

The Tier ‘A’ teams consist of Tamil Union, Chilaw Marians, CCC, NCC, Badureliya CC and Lankan CC in Group ‘A’ with SSC, Colts, Bloomfield, Ragama CC and Saracens in Group ‘B’ The Tier ‘B’ has Panadura SC, Police, Air Force, Navy and Moors in Group ‘A’ and Seeduwa/Raddoluwa CC, BRC, Singha SC, Antonian SC and Army in the Group ‘B’.

Nevertheless come rain or not the teams involved in the tournament are hard at practice, with most of them training in the indoor nets as they are unable to do outdoor practice sessions. Tamil Union this season will be led Sri Lanka player Jeewan Mendis with former Sri Lanka ‘A’ and shadow coach of the senior national team Chandika Haturusinghe as the coach. Chilaw Marians coached by Mahesh Weerasinghe will have prolific batsman Mahela Udawatte as the captain.

CCC is led by Nisal Randika with Charith Senanayake as the coach. Sri Lanka opening batsman Upul Tharanga is the captain of NCC and Hemantha Devapriya as the coach. T.M. Sampath will lead Badureliya CC with Dumindu Hemal being in charge as the coach. Lankan CC who is playing in the top division for the first time and the new entrants will be led by Hasantha Fernando with Geethika Warnakula being the coach.

SSC will be led by that diminutive wicket keeper and top batsman Kaushal Silva with Avishka Gunawardena as the coach. Malintha Warnapura leads Colts with Nishantha Weerasinghe being the coach. Another Sri Lanka player Chamara Silva will lead Bloomfield with Tharanga Dhammika Perera being the coach.

All rounder Kaushalya Weeraratne will lead Ragama CC with Dharshana Gamage being the coach while Saracens SC will be led by Samith Dushantha with the coach being Dinesh Kumarasinghe.
CCC will be most effected side as three of their top players have joined other clubs. Their former skipper Jehan Mubarak along with Chamara Kapugedera have joined NCC while Michael Vandort has shifted to Ragama CC.

Apart from these three players there is no other major change while most of the clubs have brought in young blood in players who have represented the Sri Lanka Schools national team. If there is no change in the schedule the matches due to played on December 1 are Tamil Union vs Chilaw Marians at P. Sara Stadium, NCC vs CCC at NCC, Lankan CC vs Badureliya CC at Reid Avenue, Colts vs SSC at Colts and Ragama CC vs Bloomfield at Thurstan ground.

The Tier ‘B’ scheduled matches are Police vs Panadura at Police Park, Navy vs Air Force at Welisara, BRC vs Seeduwa/Raddoluwa CC at BRC and Antonian SC vs Singha SC at Kadirana.
