Junior Joes Cricketers Excel to enter Knock-Out Stage

All three under 13 teams of St Josephs College, Colombo have qualified to play in the Knock-out stage of the Sri Lanka Schools under 13 tournament following the completion of the first round and second round games.

The Under 13 A team B teams have taken a further step and moved into the Pre-Quarter final stage which is expected to be worked out shortly.

The A team playing in the A division and led by Kevin Cotling registered three first inning wins in the first round and figured in three no decisions in the second round against St Sebastian’s Moratuwa, St Anthony’s Katugastota and Dharmapala Pannipitiya .

Skipper Cotling was in cracking form smashing two centuries and notching up over 350 runs while Avishka Fernando also scored over 350 runs inclusive of a century and two half centuries. Left arm leg spinner Akila Perera was the chief wicket taker with 21 wickets.

The B team led by Harin Cooray won four first round games and a further three in the second round to move into the pre-quarter final stage.

Harin, who is the youngest son of former Josephian Cricketer Hiran Cooray was outstanding throughout the tournament with his left-am-leg-breaks picking up 32 wickets in nine games. Opener Kesara Kumarapperuma was their top scorer with over 350 runs inclusive of four half centuries.

The C team led by Jehan Fernandopulle also moved into the pre-quarter final stage after recording one outright win and a no decision. Jehan was the pick of the bowlers claiming 16 wickets in four games that included a match bag of 9 for 16 against St Joseph’s Grandpass.

The success of the Josephian junior cricketers comes on the back of their Under 15 team which emerged as All Island Joint Champions after their final against Richmond was washed –off.

The Junior Cricketers are coached by Janaka Deegodagamage,(A)Kapila Manohara(B) and Anil Gunasinghe(C) while Susilough De S Wijeratne is the Cricket Co-coordinator of the school.
