Suriyadevi arrives in Kotte

This article is part of a continuing series on the ‘Mahavamsa,’ the recorded chronicle of Sri Lankan history

All the people in Kotte were jubilant. Commander Veediya Bandara got married to Suriyadevi. But once more Veediya Bandara was imprisoned. This time it was under the Portuguese. Once again Suriyadevi had to undergo difficulties and work for the release of her husband. Nature showed an unexpected blessing for them. That was a change in the monsoon winds. The winds were so rough that navigation was made almost impossible.

There were constant storms at sea. The Portuguese thought of keeping Veediya Bandara imprisoned in Colombo, till the weather pattern changed for the better.

The rulers of Kotte, on their part, did not show much interest in getting him released. Suriyadevi was disgusted over this. She decided to go to her father, King Mayadunne and seek help. King Mayadunne’s only dream was to be the ruler of the entire land of Sri Lanka.

Veediya Bandara was a leading enemy who prevented him from achieving this goal. But the king felt sorry for the helpless state his daughter had to suffer. She kept on pleading with her father to get her
husband released. The king had no escape. His hard-heart melted. He could no longer bear to see the pain, his daughter was going through. He really felt sad. Ultimately, he promised her, that he would do his best to get him released.

But he made her understand, that it should be kept a top secret. If his son were to get to know this, disaster was sure to follow. He knew that his son, Tikiri Bandara, was a tough character. He was already in anger over the marriage of his sister and Veediya Bandara.

This tough individual, Tikiri Bandara, was rather suspicious about his sister’s visit. He was wondering whether she had come to ask for help, to get her husband released. Prince Tikiri Bandara met his father. He stressed the fact that no help, whatsoever, should be given to save Veediya Bandara. If any help was given, he would create havoc in the palace he warned. In the meantime, there arose an uprising in the
Kingdom of Kotte. That was by the people who were supportive of Veediya Bandara.

They did not like Thammita Suriya Bandara who succeeded Veediya Bandara. The people did not listen to him. King Dharmapala too did not bother to supervise the administration of his kingdom. He did not have any idea about it either. The entire administration was run by Thammita Suriya Bandara. As time went, he found it difficult to carry on.

Veediya Bandara was Thammita Suriya Bandara’s older brother. But Thammita, was not as clever as his brother. Tammita Suriya Bandara had to face a lot of difficulties. On several occasions the people of Kotte revolted against him. On every such occasion, armies of Kutinno came to his help and suppressed the unrest. He had the rebels punished.

Veediya Bandara got to know everything that was happening in the country, through his spies. There were a lot of Sinhala people in the fort of Colombo, at this time. Amongst them were the spies of both Kotte and Sitawaka. But they were serving the Portuguese faithfully.
