It was a packed programme of seminars, lectures and workshops and of course, the craft village but come evening it was time for the spotlight to shift to the catwalk. Eight semi-finalists presented their designs on the ramp at the Sri Lanka Design Festival’s Ethical Fashion Show last Saturday at the Mount Lavinia Hotel.

The Ethical Fashion Award 2010 went to Lonali Rodrigo, Mihiri de Silva and Kanchana Thalpawila (ready to wear category) and Charini Suriyage (lingerie category). The show also saw the R.E.D. (re-engineered design) label making its appearance promoting the concept of eco-consciousness and the reduction of waste in the garment industry.

The show presented the audience a glimpse of the many well-known brands Sri Lanka produces and the country’s capabilities in terms of its manufacturing and product development potential. Also featured were collections from Barefoot, Anupama Nawalage, Kalaro, Buddhi Batiks (Darshi Keerthisena) and Yoland showcasing their use of the essence of traditional Sri Lankan arts, crafts and culture in their design.
