An act from the heart

Every person in every society, in every nation, is called to fulfill a specific purpose. Each of them holds the key to change and social transformation irrespective of who they are and where they come from. The ability to make a difference in the community lies with everyone. The question is: how many of you are aware of this potential?

Development and change in our society requires everyone’s participation. The absence of such participation illustrates a society of individuals, ‘existing’ solely to meet their needs and pass through the journey of life.

Volunteerism, especially among youth, facilitates this participation. Youth volunteerism benefits not just society at large, but those who volunteer as well, individually. Youth volunteerism engages young men and women in activities and projects designed to help the greater community. It provides a platform where young people can voice their opinions, share their ideas and contribute towards this development. It develops unity and creates friendship amongst diverse range of individuals.
Volunteerism also encourages youth to act on issues pertaining to their community, and today, its importance is stressed more than ever before.

Volunteerism isn’t simply sharing your skills and talents to help others; it isn’t about fame or titles, labels or medals of honour. It is an act from the heart- a heart that’s willing to serve the people without any conditions or restraints. Our contribution, our efforts and support should be given with joy, without hesitation or thought of personal gain - for that is the true spirit of volunteerism. We inspire and encourage others to act when our kindness and support is extended without selfish gain. In today’s challenging world, youth volunteerism needs to be recognized and supported. It has had widespread growth around the globe but, unfortunately, the idea still remains low in our nation.

The energy and enthusiasm however prevails; it is only a matter of positively harnessing it and working towards increasing youth volunteerism in this nation.

The ultimate vision of youth volunteerism is to communicate the role and positive impact of young people in their community. Change begins with us and it begins now. Share with others your ‘sparkling tiara of smiles and tears, and rich legacy of caring’. The words of a young volunteer summarize well the meaning communicated above:

“I’m all I could be today, because tomorrow may never be; but today I will do and be the change!
If we do not speak up now, when should we? Is it not now that the innocent are being oppressed, harassed, discriminated? Is it not now that their rights are being violated? Is it not now that ignorance is common? Is it not now those who speak are being shut? Therefore if not now, when should we speak up?”
