It was time to renew my well-worn National Identity Card, which had become almost illegible. I submitted my NIC renewal application to the local Divisional Secretariat.

I travelled to Colombo and met the Commissioner for Registration of Persons, Jagath P. Wijeweera. Less than two hours later I had my new NIC. I then went to the Divisional Secretariat, Matara, to get my Senior Citizens’ Card, which I received in 15 minutes.

The state machinery seems to be working most efficiently under Mr. Lalith Weeratunge, Secretary to the President. We should be grateful to him for urging public servants to perform their duties with commitment, dedication and enthusiasm.

Nanda Nanayakkara, Matara
