Matale Hockey Festival on Oct 9 and 10

The ‘Dialog’ sponsored Matale Old Vijayans Cup all island inter-club hockey sevens will take place in Matale on October 9 and 10 for the twelfth consecutive year. Nandimitra Ekanayake Astro-Turf and Edward Park are the venues for the much looked forward to hockey festival in the hill country conducted by the Vijayans Sports Club of Matale.

The two day tournament will have two main categories for men and women and a special category for boys under 14 for the second successive year.

According to the Secretary of Vijaya College Past Pupils Association, S.G. Punchihewa this year’s tournament will involve 24 teams. Two overseas teams from Chennai, India in the men’s competition and 14 teams in the boy’s competition are also billed to take part.

The boys under 14 category includes teams from Kandy and Matale Educational Zones as well as teams from leading National Schools such as Ananda, Nalanda, Dharmapala (Colombo) and Mahinda (Galle).
