A technical path to glory

CIMA Technical Paper Competition is an annual competition organized by the Sri Lanka division, to promote professional development of CIMA graduates. It provides an opportunity to local members to enhance their technical knowledge, analytical writing skills, and ability to apply various principles and techniques in practice by researching and submitting a paper on a cutting edge topic relevant to business.


CIMA recognizes winners of the 2010 Technical Paper Competition at the recently held CIMA Convocation

This year's topics focused on areas of sustainability, governance, leadership, finance transformation, fair value accounting, risk, and change management. Sutheash Balasubramaniam, Chairman of the CIMA Sri Lanka Board commenting about the competition said 'The CIMA professional who has the ability to articulate, analyse and transform theory into practice has a definite edge above the rest.
This is a much sought after skill in today's corporate world where organisations are looking to make a difference.'

Tharindu Ediriwickrama who is presently the Executive - Trainee at DFCC Bank (Matara branch) was adjudged the winner of the competition. His paper was on 'The turbulent business environments: the place for transformational leaders'.

Ediriwickrama sharing his experience about the competition says, 'The CIMA Technical paper competition is an excellent opportunity for all CIMA members and passed finalists to upgrade their knowledge on various topics in the technical areas of modern management and business.

Further it encourages us to rethink theories we learnt in new paradigms and search the application of such theories in the Sri Lankan context.' Malika Godakanda, Accountant of Lankem Ceylon was adjudged the first runner-up for her paper on 'Importance of change management in driving business success' and Dinupa Peiris, Management Training Executive of Lanka Hospitals Corp. PLC was adjudged the second runner-up for her paper on 'The turbulent business environments: the place for transformational leaders'.

Further, Chandrien De Mel Accountant of Bodyline (Pvt) Ltd was highly commended for his paper on 'Finance transformation: the changing role of the management in today's environment'. The papers were assessed and the winners adjudged by an eminent panel of judges chaired and moderated by Dr. Uditha Liyanage, Director of PIM and comprised of Malinga Arsakularatne, Mangala Fonseka, Manil Jayesinghe and Dr. Sunil Nawaratne.

Dr. Liyanage commenting about the competition stated 'The technical paper competition helps CIMA accountants to hone their analytical and conceptual skills.' CIMA prides itself on graduating chartered management accountants who possess the business acumen essential to drive modern day organizations.
