Saliyapura comes alive with Gajaba Supercross

By M. Shamil Amit

All arrangements have been finalized to conduct the Gajaba Supercross which is scheduled to take place at the Saliyapura motor track this morning which comes alive after two years. The much looked forward to motor racing event in the North Central Province did not take place during the last two years. Now as the ethnic conflict is over the organizers -- Gajaba Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army along with the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) are striving to make year’s event a success.

Major General Chagi Gallage said: “It’s a big relief as the motor track which was the brainchild of a veteran Hans Ralf was just idling. Apart from motor racing we are planning to have more entertainment of this sort for the benefit of the people in this district.

“So the motor racing event is being conducted for the benefit of those killed in action and injured soldiers and their families with the idea of uplifting their living standards. “Funds generated will be utilized for various projects which have benefited the soldiers in their day to day life. On the other hand we now want to encourage people from the North East to be a part of this entertainment which they have missed for nearly three decades”.

Rodney Mason President of SLARDAR said that the the drivers and riders are going to find a tough time on this track as it is the fastest track in Sri Lanka and added: “We have the confirmation of three Indian riders taking part which is going to be interesting. They will give the local riders the much needed experience. The organizers are expecting over 100 competitors both in the motor car and motor bike categories”.

Most of the top drivers and riders of Sri Lanka are expected to take part and with 25 events lined up for the day there is no doubt that spectators too are going to have an entertaining day of driving and riding by watching the competitors in action.
