A Degree in Psychology after A/Levels
By Gishan Sumanasiri

A simple response to the above question might be, "just about anything that involves working with people." The study of Psychology is an excellent preparation for many rewarding careers, professions and post graduate options in both Sri Lanka and overseas. Psychology is best defined as the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. It gives us the skills and knowledge to help ourselves and others.

The field of Psychology has become one of the most attractive and exciting career choices today. The recent increase in alcoholism, suicide rates and youth unease together with psychological disorders caused by war, tsunami and other natural disasters are clear indications of the urgency and the demand for more practical and hands-on psychology education in Sri Lanka.

A degree in Psychology can lead to many rewarding careers in Health and Wellness, Marriage/Family Counseling, Medicine, Relief and Social Work, Human Resources, Non Government Organisations (NGO), Organisational Development, Corporate Coaching, Marketing and Eco - Tourism.

Limited higher education options in Psychology prevented Sri Lankan students from enjoying the benefits of this noble career in the past. Students were compelled to continue with studies that often led to non-university qualifications with limited recognition and value.

Opportunities in Psychology
According to Dr. Nancy Stone - Ph. D. (Texas Tech University) - Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychological Science at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S & T), USA "The psychology education in Sri Lanka was traditionally restricted to those few students who attended college in Sri Lanka or had the luxury of acquiring a foreign University education.

The Missouri S&T Psychology degrees at ANC offer Sri Lankan and regional students an opportunity to study at home. Students who obtain a Missouri S&T degree will be able to face the challenges in the job market, as their degree programme will give them core applied and practical knowledge, decision making skills and required communication skills" stated Dr. Stone who recently visited Missouri S & T International Programme Centre (IPC) in Sri Lanka.

As also observed by Professor Stone "upon the completion of their BA or BS Psychology degrees graduates have an opportunity of pioneering a rewarding, in-demand field, with immediate and multiple options for career specialization. In addition, graduates may elect to further their studies with post graduate degrees or licenses abroad or locally.

The Missouri S&T degrees offered at ANC are the same as the degrees offered on the US Campus. This is an ideal opportunity for Sri Lankan students to become a part of our world leading education. Although many students will complete their degrees without leaving Sri Lanka, other students will opt to transfer to S & T to complete their last two years of study" concluded Dr. Stone.
