Shirley Jayawardane, re-elected President of Central Province Women’s Chamber

Shirley Jayawardane, Managing Director and Managing Editor of The Kandy News and Operations Director of the Kandy-based think tank Global Vision – Centre for Knowledge Advancement was recently re-elected President of the Central Province Women’s Chamber of Commerce in an election that was unopposed.

Suwashini Weerasingha was elected as senior vice president and Mona Chondon as vice president. The Secretary is Damayanthi Maddegoda and Treasurer Kumuduni Weeresakera. Rosita Samarajeewa as immediate past president, Malani Ariyaratna, Padmini Mallawaarachchi, Devika Vidanapathirana, Namali Wadasinghe, Sumathi Gunasekaram, . Subodani Maduwanthi, Pushpa de Mel, Kanthi Madagammana Durga Dayananda, Rukshimali Jayatissa, Surangi Samarajeewa were elected as Directors to the board.

Ms. Jayawardane in her acceptance speech thanked the membership for the trust placed in her. She identified two areas of activity that she said she would focus on in the coming fiscal year.

One was to make the Chamber financially more stable and viable and the other was to try to implement some of the proposals that were made in a report on “Constraints Faced by Small-scale Female Entrepreneurs” that a team of researchers from Tulane University prepared in July-August this year for the Chamber with the assistance of the Central Province Ministry of Industries. She urged the new Board of Directors to work as a team to promote female enterprises to make full use of the more stable investment climate that is emerging after the end of the war.
