Dhanushka leads team through the gateway

Gateway International School’s Dhanuskha Gunasekera produced a match winning performance in the finals of the Under 17 All Island Basketball tournament, organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association, to take home the Most Valuable Player award and help his team walkway with the championship.

The inspired outing, which saw him earn 23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and his third double-double of the season, helped his team to a 64-57 victory over St. Joseph’s College at the S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia courts.

Some of the first half’s most crucial plays came from Gunesekera and his teammate Shehan Udugampola. Udugampola consequently went on to bag the ‘Most Defensive Player of the Finals’ title. Meanwhile Brendan Keyser booked the other prize of the finals when he was named ‘Best Offensive Player of the Finals’.

On their way to the finals Gateway enjoyed quarter and semifinal victories over St. Peter’s College and St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa respectively. In the match for third place, S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia consoled themselves with a victory over St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa.
