‘Detective’ at double-cross

‘Detective’ directed by one of the leading ‘French New Wave’ directors, Jean-Luc Godard will be screened at 3 pm on Tuesday, September 7 and at 6.30 pm on Wednesday September 8 at the Alliance Francaise de Colombo.

Made in 1985, this film revolving around a ludicrously inefficient hotel detective and his inspector nephew who are trying to solve a murder, director Godard takes a conventional detective thriller and manages to produce something quite original for its audience.

In a Parisian hotel, two detectives are investigating a murder which took place two years earlier. Meanwhile, a married couple, Emile and Francoise Chenal, are trying to extort money from a boxing manager, Jim Fix Warner.

But Warner is also hounded by the Mafia and, despite fixing the boxing match, it looks unlikely that he can pay off all his debts. The two stories become inextricably linked. The film is more suitable for persons above 15 years.
