Another chance for Indunil at YOG

Rangi Akbar reporting from Singapore

An unexpected turn of events gave Sri Lanka’s 1000 Meters runner Indunil Herath another chance at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore when he takes part in Stage Two - Final B of the event at the Bishan Stadium today.

Indunil Herath

This announcement was made late on Friday. The reason: Indunil had returned the best time clocked by the losers at the Boys 1000 Meters Heats, when he was placed seventh out of ten competitors. Indunil returned a time of 2.38, which also happens to be his personal best. Indunil, however, is a seasoned campaigner in the 800 Meters but he was entered as a wildcard to the 1000 Meters because Sri Lanka does not have runners of his caliber for the longer version.

Meantime Sri Lanka’s Table Tennis players went down fighting to their opponents at the YOG yesterday. In the morning Nuwani Navodya lost to Yee Ka Ng of Hong Kong 0-3 (4-11, 8-11 and 4-11). Hasintha Hashiranga staged a gallant fight and crashed out at 2-3 against Ondrej Bajger of Cezecheslovakia, the scores being 13-15, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 and 9-11. Hasintha played extremely well to counter the power-smashes of his opponent but Bajger had the last laugh with his well placed shots.
Once again Nuwani Navodya held stage next and lost a sterling game to Carelyn Cordero of Puereto Rico at 2-3 (11-8, 8-11, 4-11, 8-11 and 11-9).

Hasintha Shashiranga had two matches before the close. In the first one he lost a close encounter to Tanapol Santiwattanatarm of Thailand by two games to three. The scores read 7-11, 14-12, 12-10, 9-11 and 5-11.

Obviously tired out by the earlier games Shashiranga lost 0-3 to Hei Chieu Chung of Hong Kong (7-11, 4-11, 9-11)
