Rathugala resident wants burial site returned to Veddahs

By Sumanasiri Gunathilleke

A member of the Veddah community says a piece of land that was originally a cemetery for the indigenous people of the area has been cleared by a businessman for the purpose of setting up a farm.
Suddha Vanniralage Aththo of Rathugala claims the two-acre plot of land has been a burial site for the Veddhas since 1940. He has asked the authorities to restore the site to his community.

Moneragala Government Agent K. S. Mihindukulasooriya said the land in question falls within an area that was acquired by the state in 1972, under the Land Reclamation Act, and the property belongs to five parties.

The GA promised to take action to restore the land claimed by the Veddah community.
