The Housing Scheme

By Manoshi de Silva

The fly flew around the neighbourhood in search of something to eat. Suddenly, he spotted a huge garbage dump by the side of the road. Zoom… He flew and sat on an empty yoghurt cup.

“You’ll have to move away from there…!” said a mosquito, “That’s the cot my babies are sleeping in!”
“Oh sorry,” said the fly and peeped into the yoghurt cup. Sure enough, there were some queer looking little things swimming in it. “Are these your babies?” asked the fly sounding surprised, “They don’t look like you at all.”

“Yes, that’s what baby mosquitoes look like!” The mosquito said rudely. “Now fly away from here! I haven’t got all day to answer your questions. I am a busy person!”

The fly looked at the garbage dump. There were all sorts of things in it. There were different types of food, bottles, and cups. “This is great!” shouted the fly and happily sat next to a piece of cake. It was a bit stale. But that’s how flies liked it. “This place would make a great home,” he thought.

Suddenly food started to fall on the fly. There were different types of food. Rice, curries, sweets and all sorts of things. “Whoo-hoo it’s raining food!” the fly shouted in glee. “It’s not raining food, silly!” said someone. She was another mosquito. She was sitting on an empty king-coconut shell. “Every now and then people come and throw garbage. That’s what happened just now!” she explained.

“Oh!” said the fly “so, do you also work for this dengue spreading project?”“I see…” said the fly, “so, do you raise your babies here too?”“Of course! We all do. This is a good ‘housing scheme’ people have built for us!” the mosquito said.

“I wonder if I too can get an apartment here…” said the fly looking around. The mosquito nodded her head, “I am sure you will find a home here! This place is getting bigger by the minute.” The fly started to roll on the food happily. There was enough food to feed an army of flies. “I wonder if I can find myself a job as well,” he said. Only then did he see a bunch of other flies. All gathered around a sweet wrapper. They were licking the chocolate on it, like crazy.

“You can work with us,” said one of them. “What do you do?”“What a menace!” shouted a woman trying to chase them away. They laughed and flew from here to there and there to here. “Catch us if you can” they said mocking her.

The next day when the fly entered the house he saw that the food was all covered. There was something different about it. He then flew into a room. A little girl was lying on the bed. She didn’t look too well. A person who was sitting by the child examined her.

“She has high fever!” he said. “Must be due to all those mosquitoes, breeding in that dump-yard.”
“The house is filled with flies and mosquitoes!”said a lady.

“Oh, must be the work of one of those projects the mosquitoes where talking about!” thought the fly. “I wonder how well the ‘germ spreading campaign' of the flies, is going on…”

The next morning the fly woke up in his new home in the garbage dump. He heard voices. There were people standing there holding some sort of thing. But this time it was not a bag filled with goodies for the residents in the garbage dump. And food didn’t rain into the dump like it did on other days.

He flew up higher to get a better view of what was going on and “SWOOSH…” the whole place got covered by a fume.

“Spray it well!” said one man. The fly saw the mosquitoes coughing and falling on top of one another. “Oh no!” cried the fly. Once the fumes settled there were no living mosquitoes or flies to be seen. The fly sat on a branch and watched in fear.

That same evening a huge green truck came and collected all the garbage by the road. A sign was put by the road, " dumping garbage is prohibited!" it read.

“That’s the end of our ‘housing scheme’ and the ‘disease spreading projects,’ ” thought the fly. He flew away to find a new home.
