Garbage Street, Mt. Lavinia

Residents living in Menerigama Place, off Dakshinarama Road, Mount Lavinia, say their neighbourhood has become one giant garbage dump. Trucks loaded with garbage are parked outside their houses for up to three days at a time, blocking the entrances to homes and giving off bad odours.

Stray dogs looking for food tear open the bags and spill the garbage all over the street. The neighbourhood is steadily filling up with stray dogs. Garbage trucks are also parked along Templar’s Lane and D. G. Wijesiriwardene Mawatha.

Residents say the Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council has given a private company the contract to collect the garbage, but some garbage collectors demand money from them.

Garbage collecting is irregular and there are no checks on dumping rubbish in the streets, the residents add. Meanwhile, the garbage has become a breeding ground for rats and other vermin.
