On a very rare occasion the Bata-The Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year awards have gone outstation. The main award of the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award has been booked by Mahinda College stroke maker Rumesh Buddika who is presently touring England with the Sri Lanka Under 19 side while the Outstation award has been take by Malith Chathuranga of Tissa MMV. Besides the above even the top award in International Schools Awards -- Most Promising Cricketer 2010 has gone to school from the outskirts of Colombo -- Amila Premasara of Lyceum International Nugegoda
Mahinda all rounder Rumesh Buddika recipient of the BATA the Sunday Times All Island Schoolboy Cricketer of the year 2010 is no doubt going to be proud as he will be the first ever Mahindian to be bestowed with this honour.

Apart from the main award Rumesh had the honour of winning the best batsmen award. The 19 year old stylish left handed batsman who is a member of Under 19 national team is no doubt a worthy recipient who has been a regular member having made tours to over four countries. His sterling performance in the school cricket arena made during the past seasons caught the eye of the selectors which saw him seal his place in the national junior team.

This season Rumesh was unable to represent his school due to national duties, but his performance in the tours he made and his inclusion as a member of the Under 19 side at the ICC Youth World Cup satisfied the panel of selectors who made the decision.Another cricketer down South Malith Chathuranga of Tissa MMV has done his school proud by bagging the award for the Outstation Schoolboy Cricketer of the year 2010.

In fact he is the second cricketer from his school to receive this award with Dinesh Perera having taken the award two years ago in 2008. Malith too apart from the main award was selected as the best all rounder in the outstation category.

Nineteen year old Malith had a successful season with both bat and ball. The right handed batsman ended up the season making a massive 1688 runs from 15 matches which included 12 half tons, four tons and a separate 217 as the highest which he achieved against Sri Jayewardenapura MV Kotte.

With his right arm medium pacies Malith ended taking 118 wickets. The best figures being 9 for 19 against Sri Palee Horana and another 7 for 26 in the second innings in the same match which gave him a match bag of 16 for 45. Malith has also taken five wicket hauls on 11 occasions.

Nihal Gunasekera father of Malith who is employed at the CWE said his son has sacrificed so much to the game he loves. And added that Malith has not neglected his studies and got through his Ordinary Level Examination and he is due to sit for his Advanced level exams next month.
The awards ceremony will be held on September 3 at the BMICH.
