A book that was channelled by free flow of consciousness

Sitting in her airy room, Laurel Botsford tells me she believes in Higher Beings. It seems like a conversation better suited for midnight séances, but Laurel’s perspective on the supernatural is complicated. Her new book, ‘Lifting the Veil of Consciousness’ took her two years to write and she says it contains much wisdom. It would sound like boasting, except Laurel explains that she didn’t write most of the book, instead she channelled it.

“Channelling is about opening yourself up to the power of the universe, just like in energy healing,” she explains. She’s familiar with the idea from her many hours as a practitioner of acupuncture, shiatsu therapy and orthopaedic manual therapy.

She uses a simple free flow of consciousness and likens her channelling to listening to one’s intuition. The idea for the book came after Laurel had her aura read – and was told that she was meant to write a book. Several past attempts to author a novel hadn’t paid off, but Laurel said she finally knew what she needed to do. It helped that she was in just the right place. Laurel has lived here for just over ten years – “my awareness of spiritual happenings has been here in Sri Lanka,” she says. Born in America, she has travelled widely and lived in Holland, Israel, Australia, and the Maldives. Wherever she’s been, she’s kept her telescope close.

An amateur astronomer, Laurel says she takes great pains to keep abreast of the latest happenings in astrophysics. When the term is used in her foreword, Laurel places a little asterisk beside it – just in case you’re not entirely certain what astrophysics is, you can look it up in the scientific glossary provided in the back of the book. “There’s a lot of energy healing, there’s a lot of science,” says Laurel of the book.

Techniques on expanding consciousness and guided meditations are also offered. The book opens with a paper titled ‘Light limits us to the Speed of Light’ in which Laurel all but challenges Einstein. In her foreword she writes: “Here you will find Science and Spirituality presented side-by-side showing how each, in its way, is helping to open our doors to a new understanding of Consciousness.”

Priced at Rs. 1000, the book is available at Barefoot.
