Heart-breaking ‘love letter’

Panduka: Courageous lad of 21

I found it hard to describe my feelings after reading the story, “Leukaemia, my love”, written by leukaemia victim Panduke Jayawardena (The Sunday Times Magazine, June 27). I did not know whether to be happy or sad. How can a boy of 21 years be so brave and courageous in the face of a killer disease?

I heard about Panduke Jayawardena the day he was admitted to a private hospital, in Colombo. I heard how family, relatives, friends and well-wishers had rallied round him to show him that that he was not alone, and that they were there to fight his illness with him. Alone, he has fought his battle bravely.

His “love letter”, written while he was in India for the operation, is full of positive feelings. All persons – sick or not sick – should read Panduke Jayawardena’s letter and learn a lesson from this young man.

God bless you, son.
