Seven welfare centre inmates released

Seven young people were released from the Tellippalai Welfare Centre yesterday. All seven have places in tertiary institutions – the Vipulananda Dance and Music Academy, in Batticaloa, and the University of Moratuwa.

The seven young people had been sent to the welfare centre as LTTE suspects. The release took place during a visit by the Minister for Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms, D. E. W. Gunasekara, who was in Jaffna to participate in the Ceylon Communist Party’s 67th annual conference. The conference was held in Jaffna after a break of 30 years.

Dharmalingam Sidarthan, leader of the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), and A. Varadaraja Perumal, former Northeast Provincial Council Chief Minister and Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) secretary general, also took part in the Communist Party conference.
