Seven cueists qualify to pre-quarters

58th National Billiard Championship

The first round matches of the 58th national billiard championship which is in progress now at the BSASL billiards table in Reid Avenue is at the tail end with the final set of matches due to be played today.

From the matches that have been played so far defending champion K.H. Sirisoma of SLPA along with six other cueists namely Bharatha Siriwardena (BRC), A.A. Careem (MSC), Amil Rohana (Carltons SC), M. Farshad (MICH), Zuraish Hasim (OAC) and S.H.M. Aslam (MSC) have qualified to the pre-quarter finals having won their matches.

Sirisoma looks set to retain the title when he ended his round robin matches with an unbeaten record. Some of the round robin matches were played in the morning and afternoon sessions yesterday.
Former national billiard champion and veteran W.A.J. Weerasinghe of AAC who is over 75 years-old recorded a comfortable win over M. Uvais of YMBA Galle, while B.R. Tillekeratne of BRC too coasted to an easy win over A. Mukthar of MSC.

In the other matches fancied cueists won their respective matches with the minimum of fuss. The other nine cueists that will qualify to the pre-quarter finals will be known after the completion of the remaining matches due to be played today.

Rohitha de Silva (SLPA) beat A.H. Manoorjan (MSC) (319-312). Bharatha Siriwardena (BRC) beat G. Devapriya (YMCA Colombo) (212-132) S.H.M. Aslam (MSC) beat M. Nasoordeen (MICH) (522-332). M. Nasoordeen (MICH) beat Pawan Santani (OAC) (297-272). W.A.J. Weerasinghe (AAC) beat M. Uvais (YMBA Galle) (450-390). B.R. Tillekeratne (BRC) beat Ameer Mukthar (MSC) (338-228).
