Saints go marching into Kandy

By Russell C. Chitty

After years of wowing appreciative audiences in Colombo, the singing group now so well known as the Saints, will venture out to the hill capital of Kandy on July 3 to entertain music lovers there. Saints in Renaissance will be featured at the Trinity College Hall under the auspicious of the Kandy Good Shepherd Convent Past Pupils’ Association for the purpose of raising much needed funds to complete the construction of new class rooms for the school.

The popular choral group, which came to be known as the Saints consist of former students of educational institutions named after the saints. They will set the evening’s musical tempo rolling with the rendering of that all time favourite, O! When the Saints Go Marching In.

Some of the songs they have selected include, among others, the Battle Hymn of the Republic; the Solemn Ave Verum and the Peace Song – Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.
The group will also feature popular Sinhala songs which include the popular Sanasen Nalavenna Sudho being one among several others.

In their sing-a-long segment the Saints will feature popular songs such as the Banana Boat Song; Island in the Sun; Come Back Lisa and the Jamaican Farewell.

For their guest spot the Saints have invited a Kandy Shepherdian musical group calling themselves the DVRTHs – the initial letters of the girls who make up the group.

The past pupils who make up this talented group have had their musical grounding in the school choir and now sing in unison at functions and public concerts. The DVRTHs will entertain the audience with their line up of well known songs -- Cotton fields at home; Red, red wine; Yesterday and some popular Sinhala numbers as well.

Having attended the previous musical presentations by the Saints, there is no doubt that this too will be an evening to remember, an evening of relaxation and entertainment. Tickets for the July 3 show at the Trinity College Hall are priced at Rs.750; Rs.500 and Rs.350 and will be available with the following:
