‘Team of 77’ pushes for UNP reforms

A group of former UNP MPs has formed an organization, known as the ‘team of 77’, to strengthen the party’s reforms process. Former Deputy Minister M. D. Premaratna told a news conference in Colombo that the group, committed to reviving the crisis-ridden party, would submit proposals to the UNP reforms committee.

“Local government elections are on the way and a stronger UNP should be facing the polls. The proposals would aim to strengthen the party and ensure that it regains power,” he said.

He said the ‘team of 77’, comprising UNP members who were elected to power at the 1977 elections, would meet soon to decide on the reform proposals.

Premaratna said that although party members had sent their individual proposals to the committee, the separate group had been formed to broaden the scope of reforms.

Former Minister Vincent Dias said the UNP had suffered serious setbacks in recent years and the group would make a collective effort to boost the reforms process.
