Talent galore

After a no show for 30 years, ‘Revue’ organised by the Commerce Department of the Jayewardenepura University, showcased an extravaganza of talent with a bang.

It was a moment to reckon with when the future managers of the corporate industry forgot their projects and presentations to showcase their talent and enthrall the audience. They danced, acted and sang and the audience couldn’t get enough of them.

“Yes, we can perform too,” one of the performers at the show, Janu, says. “We are not a bunch of nerds.”

They say it has been 30 years since they organised an event at university, but after watching the programme and after witnessing the professionalism they displayed, I had a tough time believing it was their first.

President of the Commerce Society, Bandula Thilakasiri, enthusiastically says, “We are the managers of the future who will be organising events and managing people. It is important for us to have some practical experience.”

It all began with the exhibition of creative works by students of the department. The works exhibited included photographs, paintings and also poems.  “Some of the best work of the students were selected and exhibited from the entrance to the hall as a way of welcoming the guests and the best of these will be awarded with prizes and certificates,” Jayanga Weerasena, one of the event coordinators said.

“We use to take part in the shows organised by other departments and win many prizes. We have many talented people in our department,” says Bandula proudly. And we couldn’t agree with him more. Once the curtains were raised and the show started, it was talent galore.

The local spirit was alive when students dressed in sari and conversed with the audience in Sinhalese, Tamil and English. The performances left the audience spellbound. To name a few, some of them which made the crowd go gaga were the drama and dance presentations.

The drama which was presented Sinhalese dealt with sensitive issues effectively. Endowed with sly humour and a powerful script, it mesmerised the audience. The story centered around the lives of two lovers whose relationship goes out of hand.

Equally vibrant were the dance performances, which were coordinated by Chatushka and Tharuka. Students danced to the tunes of Govi Geethaya and also to the foot tapping Bollywood numbers.

“The planning and the preparation that went into the event were enjoyable. Everyone in the department worked hand in hand to make this show a success,” said Bandula.

For the students this is just the beginning, while they intend to capture the stage and bedazzle the public every year from now and we will be looking forward to it.
