‘Immortal Hits - Just For You’

The Maiden musical extravaganza of ‘;Chimes of the 70’s’in Colombo

‘Chimes of The 70’s’, a western pop band which revives the golden sound of 70’s Sinhala pop music introduced by late Clarence Wijewardane, will make their first musical appearance in Colombo on 31 July at 6.30 p.m. in the Bishop’s College Auditorium.

In aim of refreshing the memories of the ‘Super Concert’ series done by late Clarence Wijewardane featuring his band ‘Super Golden Chimes’ during the 70’s, this maiden concert of ‘Chimes of The 70’s’ is titled as ‘IMMORTAL HITS - Just For You’. In this concert many new songs will be sung which all are composed by Rukshan Karunanayake, the leader of ‘Chimes of The 70’s’ band. As well as the legendary stars of 70’s namely Indrani Perera, Anil Bhareti, Nihal Nelson, Vernon Perera, Shyami Fonseka, Rukshan Perera and Sri Kantha Dassanayake will add the colour to the concert as the guest artists.

In addition to the members of the ‘Chimes of The 70’s’ band, Osanda Gamage and Sanduni Athulage will be joining in singing while Wijith Peiris (ex. Drummer of Moonstones and Golden Chimes), who is the elder brother of Lankika Perera of Golden Chimes and Sri Kantha Dassanayake (ex. Drummer Super Golden Chimes) will be accompanying drums for some songs. The compere for the evening will be Dr. Vijaya Corea.

The line up of the “Chimes of The 70’s” band is Rukshan Karunanayake (Leader/Lead Guitarist/Lyricist/Melody maker/Music Director/Vocalist), Sohan Anuhas (Keyboards), Dilshan Wijesekara (Rhythm Guitarist), Chamara Jayarathne (Saxophonist), Chaminda Pushpakumara (Druumer), Isura Roshan (Bassist/Lead Vocalist), Udesha Karunanayake (Child Drummer), Roshan Jayawardena (Percussion / Vocals), Nirmani & Windya (Female Vocalists). It’s great to say that all of the band members are being school students yet & have a great talent & impression on music. Also by this time all of these members have been experts in accompanying for recordings.

The band will be musically accompanying all the guest artists and they are much assured to sustain the originality of the songs without making any harm. By the time Rukshan is recording 2 albums of 2 Sri Lankan artistes residing in Australia namely Nalin Jayawardena and Nimal Punchihewa (ex. Drummer of Super Golden Chimes and Gypsies). The album of Nalin Jayawardena titled ‘Pata Pata Samanalayin’, which consists of 18 songs will be released at this concert. Within this short period of a year since the establishment of the band, the number of new songs which has been composed by Rukshan exceeds fifty. Also the band has been requested several times to perform and remix the compositions of late Clarence, but the band has kindly rejected all those requests in respect to this late and great musician. Rukshan thoroughly believes that ‘as we have the capability of composing new songs based on Sinhala POP music style introduced by Clarence, there is no need of remixing or doing any involvement to those golden oldies which are evergreens’.

In addition to the songs performed by the guest artists in this concert, “Chimes of The 70’s” band will perform some fabulous English hits of the 70’s while rest of the songs are being their original compositions. wThe tickets of this concert are priced as Rs. 1,500/=, 1,000/=, 750/=, 500/= and now available at the Torana Music Collection (Liberty Plaza), Torana Music Box (Majestic City) and Studio Udeshan - Gampaha. More details of this concert and the band are available on their official website on www.chimesofthe70s.ning.com/

After their maiden concert in Colombo, ‘Chimes of The 70’s’ band is planning to take over this concert as a series all over the island. It will never fade away the musical experience brought by late Clarence Wijewardane to the Sri Lankan musical lovers throughout his ‘SUPER CONCERT’ series in the 70’s. As a band which preserves all the Clarence’s compositions and reviving the Sinhala Pop Music style introduced by him to the coming generations, “Chimes of The 70’s” band warmly invites all the fans of late Clarence Wijewardane and all the Sinhala Pop music lovers to witness the “IMMORTAL HITS .
