Lankan academics off to New Delhi for peace process conference

A group of Sri Lankan academics will join up with members of the Tamil Diaspora at a conference to be held in New Delhi this week. The two-day conference aims to restart the Lanka peace process.

The event is an initiative of the Observer Research Foundation, an Indian think-tank set up to influence policy formulation. The conference will be inaugurated by the Indian Foreign Secretary, Nirupama Rao.
The Sunday Times understands that the focus of the conference will be the implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lanka Constitution.

According to Dr. H. S. Hasbullah of the University of Peradeniya, one of the Lankan team members, the Sri Lankan academics were participating in the conference with the government’s blessings. He said he would be presenting a paper on the rehabilitation process in Sri Lanka.

Other members of the Sri Lanka team are Dr. T. Jeyasingham, Rector of the Trincomalee campus of the Eastern University; economist and writer Dr. Sumanasiri Liyanage of the University of Peradeniya, and Sri Lankan rights activist Shereen Xavier, director of the Home for Human Rights.
