Antonians field a young outfit

By Shamseer Jaleel

St Anthony’s College will be all out to make their presence felt when they field a very young side this season in the Singer Sri Lanka School’s League Under 20 Rugby Tournament.

Antonians produced some outstanding ruggerites who went on to represent the national team. Few of them are Priyantha Ekanayake, Laxman Ekanayake, Leroy Fonseka, Jude Pillai, Maurice Joachim, Lasantha Wijesuriya, Malith Silva, Sameera Silva, Imran Bistamin, Pradeep Liyanage, This year’s “Eagles’ outfit will be lead by reliable leader and Full Back Tharindu Chanaka who will have 8 of his last year’s players.Tharindu will have a young side with some outstanding players in the list such as Number 8 Sanka Rajaguru, Second rower Vinod Nirodasooria and Scrum Half Dinesh Tharaka.

St. Anthony’s already had 2 warm up games. They beat Carey College 45-0 and over came a tough Josephian outfit 33-13. The following games will be played at Nittawela. Trinity, Prince of Wales, Dharmaraja and St Peter’s games will be home affairs.

The side will be coached by A grade referee and veteran coach Priyantha Gunaratne. Earlier Priyantha coached Anotonians, Sri Lanka Under 19. The team will be under the watchful eye of Abu Junaideen who is a strict disciplinarian.

Antonians are well backed by their Old Antonians Rugby Club led by Rohan Daulagala. With some top rugby players propping up with this committee they are assured of good support on and off the field. Priyantha Ekanayake, Lasantha Wijesuriya and Maurice Joachim are few of them. Rohan Daulagala played for the Antonains under Leroy Fonseka in 1988 as a second row forward.
