More Cabinet posts to come

By Damith Wickremasekara

The Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) which was not offered a Ministry or a Deputy Ministry post in Friday’s Cabinet appointments has been promised a portfolio following the return of President Mahinda Rajapaksa from the SAARC summit in Bhutan next week.

Professor Tissa Vitharana, of the LSSP who was overlooked said he had discussions with President Rajapaksa and has been assured of a position.

“Our party has always been assured of a ministry and this time too we have hopes that we will be given a portfolio,” he said.

CWC leader Arumugam Thondaman who was offered the Ministry of Livestock declined to accept the ministry offered to him and left the Cabinet swearing in ceremony ahead of schedule. A CWC spokesman said his party was discussing about its future action on the matter.

The appointment of ministers and deputies from the Kandy district has also been held up due to an ongoing investigation into the circumstances which led to the re-poll in the Nawalapitiya area. Former Ministers Keheliya Rambukwella and Sarath Amunugama and S.B.Dissanayake are among those expected to be accommodated as ministers.
