St. Benedict’s grab schools under 19 hockey title

St Benedict’s showed their old prowess in the inter-schools hockey arena when they emerged champions at the Under 19 inter-schools hockey tournament which was conducted by the Western Province Schools Hockey Association.

The champion St. Benedict’s team led by Ashan Alles comprised Supun Irugalbandara (goalie), Anjula Fonseka, Sameera Fonseka, J. Surendra, Shehan Samaratunga, Malinda Ranasinghe, Gayan Rodrigo, Amantha Sandaruwan, Damian Perera, Anton Richi, Bevan Gunawardena, Rajith Perera, Reshan Batcho, Gayan Randika, Gayomar Rayan, Shiraj Ranasinghe, Natasha Fernando, Nirmal Dias and Sheron Fabin.

St. Benedict’s defeated Royal by two goals to nil in the final which was played at Reid Avenue recently. The score line stood at nil all after full time of play and they succeeded during extra time through goals scored by skipper Ashan Alles and Amantha Sandaruwan. They came into the finals with a clean record having defeated DSS 5-0, S. Thomas’ 2-1, Wesley 3-0, Dharmapala by a massive margin of 8-0 and then overcoming Nalanda 1-0 in the semi final.

The Benedictines in winning the final played cohesive hockey and rattled their opponents with skipper Ashan Alles, Anjula Fonseka and J. Suruendra spearheading the attack and goal keeper Supun Irugalbandara, Sameera Fonseka, Shehan Samaratunga and Gayan Rodrigo standing out in the defense department.
