Double Eagle clinches Governor’s Cup for the third time

By M. Shamil Amit

The prestigious horse racing event in Sri Lanka the Governor’s Cup which was held at the picturesque horse racing track in Nuwara Eliya on April 14 saw it ending with a record breaking effort by two time winner Double Eagle who cantered to the winning under the guidance of jockey S. Vijayanath.

Double Eagle put into shade a five timer for owner I. Dasanayake as he gave his owner Ajantha de Zoysa and Subodani their third successive Governor’s Cup win. This time out the Zoysa’s were there to celebrate the triple victory of their horse running under the colours of Monara India.

Double Eagle who won the prestigious Governor’s Cup for the third successive year being cantered to the winning post by jockey S. Vijayanath.

For trainer S.V.Mathialagan it was his second successive big cup victory and for jockey S.Vijayanath it was his first ever major success. S.D. Lalith could be deemed as an unlucky trainer as he was the trainer when Double Eagle first won the Governor’s Cup in 2008.

Lalith started off the days proceedings on Governor’s Cup in style with four of his horses under the colours of I. Dasanayake sweeping the boards. But when it came to the major event of the day his horse Aerobee failed to deliver the goods and had to be satisfied with the third slot.

Seven of the eight events that were held were won by the stables of I. Dassnayake and Monara India with Serendib Racing Syndicate winning the other event which was the seventh race of the day. Jockey S.D. Janaka who saddled Double Eagle’s first Governor’s Cup two years back and finished third this time was the most successful jockey when he landed a hat-trick of wins while jockeys B.C. Kumara, M. Punidaraj, L. Ravikumar and R. Parthiban saddled a win each.

Owner Dassanayake though being unable to grab the big prize continued to dominate the proceedings as in previous years. Last year he won four races and this time he went one better winning the Lemonade Cup, Sprorting Times Trophy, Sunlord Cup, Sumathi Cup and the Grand Hotel Cup.
