An Information Desk has been in operation at the Parliamentary Complex in Kotte since Friday to facilitate arrangements for the first meeting of Parliament which will take place on Thursday with particular emphasis on providing information to first-time MPs.

Information, including a brief biography of each elected member, their language of preference for taking the oaths is being collected by the Information Desk while those signing up have been given a copy of the Constitution, Standing Orders of Parliament as well as a copy of the Parliament (Powers and Privileges) Act for reference.

The MPs have also been asked to apply for residential facilities if they so wish and have also been informed of the other facilities they are entitled to as MPs.

The Information Desk will be in operation till this afternoon. Meanwhile an orientation programme for MPs, with special focus on the 67 new MPs who were elected at the April 8 general election will be held at the Parliamentary Complex on Friday and Saturday to enable them to familiarize themselves with Parliament practices and procedures.

During the two-day programme which will be addressed by Parliamentary officials, the MPs will be familiarized with Standing Orders of Parliament, the precedence of business of the House, how to present petitions etc, officials said.
