Hettiarchchi ‘Best Boxer’ at Air Force Meet

The Sri Lankan Air Force Inter Unit Boxing Championship, a two day tournament which concluded on Thursday, saw some of our airmen’s finest boxers fitting on their gloves. Competitors squared off over a range of weight classes from the Light Fly right up to Super Heavy Weight.

A.C. Kulathunga won the super heavy weight crown, Officer Cadet Buddhika claimed the heavy weight title and Off. Cadet Bandara took the light heavyweight title. In the middle weight categories Off. Cadet Gangodawila, A.C Hettiarchchi, AC Athukorala, AC Chamara took home the Middleweight, Welterweight, Light Welterweight and 60 kg welterweight prizes respectively.

A.C. Dayarathna secured the Bantam Weight trophy, while A.C. Ranasinghe won in the Flyweight category. In the lightest weight class, Light Flyweight, A.C Dharmarathne emerged victorious.
Welterweight champ Hettiarchchi walked away with the ‘Best Boxer’ honours and the Diyathalawa Air Force Unit were presented with the Champions’ Trophy.

The final day’s proceedings were graced by the current Chief of Defence Staff and Air force Commander, Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonethilake.

He also promoted Suresh Pattiarachchi, who bagged a Bronze medal at the 5th Commonwealth Boxing Championships held in India, to the rank of Acting Corporal. Pattiarachchi was also awarded a cash prize of 75,000 to support his training expenses.
