Mirage back on stage

By Sanath Weerasuriya

Popular outfit ‘Mirage’ will come alive after a lap of nearly two years. Mirage led by Donald Pieris, was formed in 1988. Mirage became a household name and became an instant hit during the late 80’s and in early 90’s.

The new ‘Mirage’ lineup will be almost a reunion of the original lineup of 1987. The new outfit comprises Donald Pieris on drums and vocals, Benji Ranabahu on bass and vocals, Derek Wikremanayike on guitar and vocals, Melantha Perera on Keyboards and vocals and Gavin Senn on keyboards, sax and vocals.

Derek is the only member in the new look Mirage who was not a part of Mirage during their twenty two year stint in the music scene. Derek replaces Kamal Perera, who is now performing with Kevin Almeida.

After forming, Mirage in 1987, Donald took his band wagon to Europe and was performing in the club circuits of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria and in Scandinavia till they moved out of Europe in 1994.

Mirage became an overnight success in Dubai. They were performing in all leading club circuits in red hot Dubai till early 2008.

‘We thought the time has come for all of us to move back home. So we decided to come to Sri Lanka in 2008. But as we expected, the music scene was not very vibrant in Colombo. So we called it a day for Mirage in 2008’ Donald explained.

Mirage will come alive at the ‘Margarita Blue’ of the Galadari Hotel from 5 April and they will perform five days a week at the Club. The current resident band ‘Aquarius’ will continue minus its leader Benji in a different venue outside the hotel.

This will be the first time that ‘Aquarius’ will go without its founder Benji Ranabahu since it has started in early 2001. Aquarius has made a line-up change in December 2009- bringing in Sanjeewa Udyanahewa as replacement for their keyboardist Ray, who left the band for his own outfit.

But with Benji leaving the band, Aquarius become bit uncertain with their act with just one Filipino girl doing frontline vocals. The Margarita Blue is open seven days a week from 11.00am to midnight on weekdays and from 11.00am to 2.00am on weekends and is open for lunch and dinner.

The beverage menu consists of many varieties of local and imported Beers, Spirits and others beverages. Happy Hour 12noon to 1.30pm and 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The Pub offers games such as Darts, Snooker and Pool while you enjoy the best and latest in sports on giant screen.
