Roads fast becoming death traps for young and old

At least ten individuals were killed and many others injured in motor accidents that were reported from several parts of the island last week. Most of these accidents were of a serious nature.
Hettipola

A 57-year-old father was killed when he was hit by a lorry while on his way home with his 10-year-old son at Kadawalagedara, Hettipola on Friday. The man had died on the spot while the boy sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Kuliyapitiya Hospital.

The deceased K.W. Sunil Bandara, Branch Manager of the Wayamba Sanwardhana Bank had sustained serious head injuries in another accident. On Friday while walking home with his son he was hit by a lorry transporting onions.

Bandara sustained serious head injuries while his son suffered serious injuries to his legs and arms.
The driver of the lorry, a resident of Jaffna, was released on a cash bail of Rs. 5000, two surety bail of Rs. 25,000 each and ordered to produce a certificate of residence at the next hearing as he was a citizen of Jaffna.

The case is to be taken up again on May 17.

Anuradhapura

Meanwhile on Monday, March 15, two 11-year-old school boys were hit by a private bus at the Sandamalgama Junction on the Anuradhapura-Medawachchiya Road. One of them died on the spot while the other --in critical condition-- is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital.

The driver of the bus had stopped the bus and run away after the accident prompting villagers to hold a protest on Thursday after the boy’s funeral, demanding the police to take action.

Subsequently the driver surrendered to the police and was produced in Court. He was remanded for 14 days.

Wariyapola

In Wariaypola yesterday, an individual sustained minor injuries following a double crash involving two buses that collided head-on and a lorry that hit the bus from behind.

Galgamuwa

A private bus plying from Kurunegala towards Galgamuwa, collided head-on with bus on its way to Kurunegala from Galgamuwa at the Minuwangete Junction on the Padeniya-Anuradhapura Road. A while later, a lorry travelling behind collided with the two buses. The lorry driver’s assistant sustained minor injuries and was admitted to the Wariyapola Hospital.

Welligatta

A motorcyclist was killed when he collided with a lorry in the Weligatta area on the Tissamaharama-Tangalle Road on Friday. He was admitted to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police spokesman SP Prashantha Jayakody identified the motorcyclist as Sudirikka Jayawickrame Indika Nishantha, a resident of Kuda Gammana 10. The lorry driver was taken into custody and was to be produced in Court yesterday.

Balangoda

Police said one person was killed and three were injured when a lorry and a three-wheeler collided head-on at Balangoda on Thursday. The accident occurred on the Badulla-Balangoda Road,.
SP Prashantha Jayakody said the driver of the three-wheeler died in the accident, the injured were transferred to the Ratnapura Hospital.The lorry driver was taken into custody and was to be produced in Court on Friday. The Balangoda police are investigating.

Angunukolapelessa

A motorcycle and a three-wheeler collided a Yakagala, Angunukolapelessa on Friday killing the pillion rider. Police identified the victim as 20-year-old Hewa Wellagage Sumith Hasantha, a resident of Jandura.

SP Jayakody said the driver of the three-wheeler was arrested following the accident and was to be produced in Court on Saturday. He added the Angunukolapelessa police were investigating,

Kegalle

On Thursday a passenger travelling in a 3-wheeler was killed when two 3-wheelers collided head-on at Kegalle. The accident occurred in the Meepitiya area on the Kegalle-Kandy Road. The victim Ostin Jayaratne Silva from Giriwaduwatte in Kegalle died after admission to hospital. The Kegalle police are investigating.

Hewagama

A motor cyclist and his pillion rider succumbed to injuries on admission to hospital after their vehicle collided with a lorry on the Colombo-Awissawella Road. The victims were identified as Nuwan Pradeep (26) and Suresh Nalaka Madhuranga (28), from Weliwita, Kaduwela. Police said the driver of the lorry was taken into custody.

Kadugannawa

Thirteen people were injured on Tuesday when a train collided into four rail compartments near the 66th Railway mile post at the Kadugannawa Railway Station on Tuesday. According to SP Jayakody the brakes on the four compartments had accidentally released and the compartments drifted into the path of the train plying towards Kadugannawa. The Kadugannawa police are investigating.

Kosgoda

A pedestrian was killed on Tuesday when he was hit by a private bus travelling from Matara to Colombo at Kosgoda on the Galle Road. SP Jayakody said the victim --29-year-old Don Kapila Ranjith-- was from Induruwa. The driver of the bus was to be produced before the Magistrate on Wednesday. The Kosgoda police are investigating.

Warakapola

SP Jayakodi said last Sunday a motorcyclist was killed when his motorcycle went out of control and toppled at Mayimoluwa, Warakapola, The motorcyclist was admitted to the Kandy Hospital while the pillion rider was admitted the Kegalle Hospital. The motorcyclist Gallathralalage Nuwan Rasika Kumara (21) was subsequently transferred to the Peradeniya hospital where he died following surgery.
