Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Dr. P. Ramanujam has sent the following response to a news item published in the Sunday Times last week, headlined: “Minister, poor wife in alleged scandal”.
“This news item refers to allocation of land for Mrs. L. R. M. Abeysinghe. The fact that the Urban Development Authority (UDA) has approved this request and forwarded a draft Cabinet Memorandum to the Ministry is true. But I wish to inform you no further action has been taken in respect of this matter and no such allocation has been made.”
News Editor’s note: Dr. Ramanujam confirms that a draft Cabinet Memorandum to allocate the land had been submitted to the Ministry, although the land itself was not allocated to Ms. Abeysinghe. The UDA Board itself had studied the request and given approval to the proposal, according to documents available with the Sunday Times. The Bribery Commission confirms that the matter is under their
