Court to hear Dhanuna’s bail plea tomorrow

An anticipatory bail application filed by the defeated presidential candidate Gen (retd) Sarath Fonseka’s son in law Dhanuna Thilakaratna will be taken up by Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratna tomorrow.

The Sunday Times learns a CID inspector has issued notice to appear in courts when the case is taken up for hearing.

Mr. Thilakaratna in his application said there were moves by the CID to arrest him under the penal code on charges of producing forged documents and committing other non-bailable offences.

He said he was seeking anticipatory bail because he felt if he was arrested he would be harassed.
Mr. Thilakaratne in his application said he was an IT consultant and his father was former Brigadier T.P. Thilakaratne and his father-in-law, Gen Fonseka, contested the Presidential election on the New Democratic Front ticket.

He said that during the election campaign, there were false allegations levelled against him that he was the local agent of Hicorp, a company which was supplying military hardware to the Sri Lanka army.
Mr. Thilakaratne said he had no link with the local company or any of its officials.

To support his claim, he urged court to examine documents tabled in Parliament by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. He said a former army officer, Upul Illangamage, had made an attempt to link him with the company and together with pro-government MP Wimal Weerawansa, held a news conference where he produced forged documents in a bid to damage the campaign of Gen Fonseka.

Mr. Thilakaratna said he had reliable information that his opponents through the CID were trying to harass him and Gen Fonseka.
