Stars delay Parliament dissolution

Likely date Feb. 9 or 10

The dissolution of Parliament, expected last Friday, has been delayed due to astrological considerations. Government officials said yesterday that President Rajapaksa would now issue a proclamation for dissolution on Tuesday or Wednesday.

“There are two auspicious times on these days. He will choose the best,” a senior official said. Mr. Rajapaksa is due to return to Sri Lanka on Tuesday after a four-day visit to Russia.

Meanwhile in Russia he was given a red carpet welcome when he arrived at the Vinucowa Airport in Moscow yesterday morning.

The president was met on arrival by senior government officials and later driven to a special state guest house where he and his Russian counterpart Dimitry Medvedev met for bilateral talks.

Also on the President’s Russian agenda is the signing of an agreement where Moscow will provide a $300 million loan for the purchase of arms and dual use equipment.

The President will also attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of his alma mater -- Peoples Friendship University of Russia (PFU), till 1991 known as the Patrice Lumumba Friendship University. This is also the first ever visit of a serving Sri Lankan President to Russia.
