State TV shuts out employees

Most employees at the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, apart from a select group, have been sent on leave on election day Tuesday and Wednesday. According to a circular, only selected employees from various sections will be on duty at the main state TV station after 5 pm tomorrow.

It is also learnt that all SLRC programmes and responsibilities have been handed over to the Additional Director General Devapriya Abeysinghe. Mr. Abeysinghe said yesterday the workers had been sent on leave for voting purposes. However he said most of the technical personnel and support staff would remain on duty during this period.

Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa is yet to respond to a letter sent to him by the Maha Nayaka of the Malwatta Chapter, the Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera, drawing the attention of the President to three Supreme Court judgments directing the state media to be fair and balanced in their coverage of the election campaign.

The Mahanayake Thera wrote to the President after some 278 lawyers met him and gave him documents to show that the Supreme Court orders were being violated by the state media.

The SC orders were given on three petitions filed by opposition’s common candidate Sarath Fonseka against Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, the Independent Television Network and the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited.
