Subsequently the Institute was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1976. With small beginnings in 1959 the Institute has now developed to be the leading Human Resource authority in Sri Lanka. The Institute has contributed significantly to develop and nurture the Human Resource Management profession in the country.

The Institute whilst catering to needs of the Membership especially in regard to the upgrading of their knowledge and skills, has conducted a wide range of professional courses which include the prestigious National Diploma in Human Resource Management which has now been upgraded to 'Professional Qualification in Human Resource Management' and thereby train quality HR professionals required by the country.

IPM Sri Lanka is a member of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resource Management through which the Institute is affiliated to the World Federation on Personnel Management Associations.
