One way to check vote rigging

No matter how “clean” an election is said to be, there are always complaints of vote rigging by supporters of the ruling party. We all know that these people stuff the boxes with bogus ballot papers, which cannot be detected.

Here is a suggestion to minimise election rigging:At each polling booth, the presiding officer and his staff should keep track of the number of ballot papers issued to voters, after taking their individual fingerprints, and check these numbers against the total number of votes cast, going by the serial numbers.

These numbers can be cross-checked at the counting centre, when the boxes are opened. If any boxes are found to contain more ballots than they should, based on the numbers, these suspect ballot boxes should be handled differently and the votes counted separately.

I hope this suggestion will catch the eye of our upright Elections Commissioner and that it will be tried out.
