Senior Buddhist prelate passes away

The Sangha Nayake of the Dharmarakshita Nikaya and Chief Incumbent of Wellawatte Suvisuddharama Purana Vihara, Ven. Gnanabhiwansa Nayake Thera, passed away on Tuesday.

The Thera has been in the forefront of leftist politics in the country for many years and was a close associate of veteran left politician, the late Dr. N.M.Perera.

He was also a founder patron of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party (SLMP) founded by Vijaya Kumaratunga.
He was a disciple of Ven. Madihe Pannaseeha Thera, the late Mahanayaka of the Amarapura Nikaya.

Prominent as a scholarly monk, Ven. Gnanabhiwansa Thero also lectured at the Vidyalanka Pirivena . His cremation will take place at the Pedris Park, Havelock Town, Colombo at 4 p.m. today.
