A film of forbidden fruit

‘The Lady with the little dog’, the cinematic creation based on Russian great writer Anton Chekhov’s short story will be screened at the Russian Centre, Colombo on January 13 at 6 pm.

Woven around a story of an adulterous affair between a Russian banker and a young lady he meets while vacationing in Yalta. The chance meeting of Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna, is evolving into a serious relationship. But he is married, and has a family.

Their relations, that have developed away from home, open up for both of them a new world, full of illusory hopes for their future life together. Back home, both strive to preserve their love, notwithstanding the circumstances…

Starring in the principal roles are the famous Russian actors Alexei Batalov and Iya Savvina, for whom this role was her debut in “big” cinema.

The film won the Prize for Best Film Program at the Cannes IFF, 1960.
