Vesak with Cinema

To spread the Dhamma with the latest popular medium of arts, the second International Buddhist Film Festival, organised by the Light of Asia Foundation will call for entries from local filmmakers soon.

Added with more categories, Vesak Film Festival 2010 scheduled to take place at the BMICH during the Vesak week is going to be a much awaited event of Vesak next year. Making it an internationally recognized event. The festival will have separate sections as international section at which the locals too can participate. Submissions under the International Category should be in English, or subtitled in English.

The categories will include short films, feature films, documentaries, animation, mobile short films and Vesak E-cards, animated pandal, arts and photographs as one category. A feature film section was added this year to expand the festival.

All the entries should be on a Buddhist theme and submitted in DVD format. Shorts must be less than 12 minutes in duration. The entries for the international section have already been called and the invitation for the local section would be announced soon.

The first Vesak Film Festival 2009 was a very successful event at which more than 90 artistes took part and more than 120 locals participated in film competitions. Nearly 800 had participated at all the competitions.

At the first International Buddhist Film Festival the Best Local Short Film was won by ‘Sachchamatha’ directed by Mahesh Munasinghe while the Best Foreign Short Film awrd was made to Malaysian filmmaker Lid Sim for his film ‘The Oil Lamp’.

In the local category ‘Grandmother’s Treasure’ of Lasantha Jayasinghe secured the second place while ‘Towards Enlightenment’ by Samitha F. Edirisinghe won the third place. In the foreign category, ‘Heart Sutra’ by Japanese director by Satoshi Hirayama won the second place and ‘Sneakarma’ by Kazubiko Mizusbina (Japan) won the third place.

In the competition of short films made through mobile-phones, the first place was won by ‘Vesak Udaanaya’ of Sunil Wijesingha and the second place went to ‘Pooppam Milayaathi’ directed by D. Chaminda and the third place secured by ‘Ciththa Veethi’ by C. Gamage Wimalaratne.
