Vivacious variety

By Adilah Ismail

The Western Music Association of St. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia can be summed up in two words – ambitious and enthusiastic. Vivace, a concert organized by 12 energetic members of the association is one of the many projects in the pipeline and boasts of a varied line-up of performers.

“Vivace (pronounced vi-va-chey) is the musical term for ‘lively’ in Italian” elaborated Dylan John (18), President of the association, explaining the reason behind the chosen name.

The concert certainly promises to live up to its name with performances by Mariazelle, Revelations, Ricky Bahar, Manuk, Monique, St. Benedict’s’ Choir, Mrs. Surekha Amarasinghe and Ishan and Rohan de Lanerolle.

Three duets by Melanie and Angie, Shiara and Roshi and the Lords Brothers as well as Thrash, a percussion group from Colombo International School round off the performances for the night.

The key word for the evening is clearly variety. “We have a bit of everything. Our performers appeal to a diverse audience,” added Sheranga Fernando(17) and Dyllen Tranchell (17), chairpersons of the project. Explaining that while most concerts appealed to only select audiences, Vivace has something for everyone.

The concert promises genres such as gospel, alternative, classical, acoustic, accapella and house (courtesy of Thrash, who incidentally uses paint tins and buckets in their performance).

The committee agreed unanimously that the experience of organizing the concert in the short span of a month had been great. “The best thing about the committee is that they never gave up” said Dylan. The committee also voiced their gratitude to Harsha Perera – Sub Warden, the performers for their co-operation and willingness to perform free of charge and Revelations, for all the assistance rendered.

The concert will be the main fund raiser of the Western Music Association and the proceeds will be directed towards a variety of projects lined up. Vivace will be held on Sunday, October 11 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium at 7pm.

The Sunday Times will be the print media sponsor for the performance. Tickets are priced at Rs. 1000/-, 750/- and 500/- and will be available at the STC Gymnasium – Mount Lavinia, Video International – Colombo 03, Dwellco Pvt(Ltd), (near Barista, Rajagiriya) and Commons.
