Protest at activation of Press Council

A public gathering to protest the activation of the Press Council is scheduled to take place at 4.00 p.m. on Tuesday at the J.R. Jayewardene Centre in Dharmapala Mawatha (opposite the Vihara Maha Devi park) with the participation of journalists, civil organizations, political parties, artistes, religious leaders and the public.

Organized by the Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Working Journalists’ Association, the Media Workers Trade Unions’ Alliance, the Sri Lanka Muslim Journalists’ Association, the Sri Lanka Tamil Journalists’ Association, the Free Media Movement and the National Forum of Journalists, the gathering would voice its protest against the attempt to activate the Press Council, thereby thwarting the freedom of the press.

A public petition will also be signed to protest the activation of the Press Council.
