Hamas fires rockets at Israel

JERUSALEM, saturday (AFP) - A rocket fired from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip landed inside Israel on Saturday without causing any casualties, the Israeli military said.

“A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip exploded inside Israel without wounding anyone,” a spokesman said without providing further details. Israeli public radio reported that the rocket hit an uninhabited area near the border with the Palestinian territory.

The attack came a day after an Israeli raid killed three Palestinians and seriously wounded three others, according to medics and witnesses, who said at least four of the victims were members of the Islamic Jihad militant group.

A spokesman for the armed group vowed “revenge for this criminal raid.” More than 50 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza in the past three months and more than 250 have been launched since the end of Israel's offensive against the territory's Hamas rulers at the turn of the year, the army said.

The number of rockets has significantly decreased since before the war, when 3,350 rockets were fired at Israel in 2008 alone.

The Islamist Hamas movement, which is sworn to Israel's destruction, has ruled Gaza since it drove out loyalists of the western-backed Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas in June 2007 during a week of bloody clashes.
